Mr. John Beaton, Founding Music Director

Mr. Beaton earned a B.A. (Honours Music) from the University of Western Ontario and a B.Ed. from the University of Toronto. Returning to his hometown of Oshawa early in his career as a professional musician and music educator, he recognized a gap in opportunities for young musicians in the city and the region. In 1993, Mr. Beaton founded the Durham Youth Orchestra, initially as the Oshawa Youth Orchestra, with the aim to nurture the artistic and personal growth of young musicians ranging from kindergarten through high school. From the beginner ensemble through to the senior level, the programming and teaching approach was carefully constructed to introduce the young musician to ensemble playing, providing the appropriate challenge at the right level within their musical journey.

Through weekly rehearsals and performing an average of three concerts per season to audiences in Durham, Mr. Beaton brought to students the experience of playing orchestral masterworks from a range of composers including Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Haydn, Mendelssohn and many others.

Mr. Beaton also organized many enriching activities for students including field trips to Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Ontario Philharmonic concerts and open rehearsals; participation at youth orchestra festivals; side-by-side performances with the Ontario Philharmonic; and coaching sessions with professional musicians from the region.

The orchestra has also been fortunate to have numerous collaborations with other ensembles in the region including the O’Neill Collegiate Chamber Choir, Durham Philharmonic Choir, Oshawa’s Resound Choir, and the Trafalgar Castle School Choirs and String Ensemble. The orchestra has provided opportunities for its young members to play alongside professional soloists, as well as a platform for new and emerging soloists in the region to experience performing with an orchestra, many for the very first time. Throughout its history, the Heart Strings Quartet, a select group of senior string players, has been called on to perform for countless special functions and community events in the region.

The DYO flourished under Mr. Beaton’s baton and administrative efforts over three decades since 1993, in partnership with other music educators, the support of community sponsors, patrons, granting agencies, and the generous contributions of volunteer parents and guardians. Since its founding, the DYO has impacted the lives of generations of young musicians in the community, introducing and nurturing a love for ensemble playing, and forging enduring friendships along the way. Among its alumni, numerous have pursued post-secondary music studies at schools including the University of Toronto, Western, McGill, Wilfred Laurier, Juilliard School and the San Francisco Conservatory, launching careers as professional musicians and educators across Canada and around the world.
